Introduction to Refractory mortar

Refractory mortar consists of refractory powder, binder and admixture. Almost all refractory raw materials can be made into powders used to prepare refractory mortar. The ordinary refractory mortar made by adding refractory clinker powder and an appropriate amount of plastic clay as a binder and plasticizer is called ordinary refractory mortar, which has low strength at room temperature, and high strength is formed by ceramic bonding at high temperatures. The chemically bonded refractory mortar, which uses hydraulic, air-hardened or thermosetting bonding materials as the bonding agent, is hardened by a certain chemical reaction before it is lower than the ceramic bonding temperature.

The particle size of refractory mortar varies according to the requirements of use, and its limit particle size is generally less than 1mm, and some are less than 0.5mm or finer.

The material of refractory mortar should be considered consistent with the material of refractory products of masonry. In addition to being used as a jointing material, refractory mortar can also be used as a protective coating for the lining by painting or spraying.

Classification of refractory mortar

1. Refractory mortar is classified by refractoriness

Usually divided into ordinary refractories (1580~1770℃), advanced refractories (1770~2000℃) and special refractories (above 2000℃) according to the degree of refractoriness; according to chemical characteristics, they are divided into acid refractories, neutral refractories and Alkaline refractories. In addition, there are refractory materials for special occasions.

2. Refractory mortar is classified according to its composition material

According to different materials, it can be divided into clay refractory mortar, high alumina refractory mortar, siliceous refractory mortar, magnesia refractory mortar and so on.

3. Refractory mortar is classified by binder:

(1) Ceramic bonded refractory mortar is a mixture composed of refractory fine aggregate and ceramic bond (plastic clay). The delivery state is dry, it needs to be used after adding water, and it is hardened by ceramic bonding at high temperature.

(2) Hydraulically bonded refractory mortar is a mixture composed of refractory fine aggregate and hydraulic binder (cement) which plays a major role in bonding. The delivery state is only in dry form. It can be used after adding water. No heating is required when hardening.

(3) Chemically bonded refractory mortar is a mixture composed of refractory fine aggregate and chemical bond (inorganic, organic-inorganic, organic). The delivery state can be either paste or dry, hardening below the ceramic bonding temperature. According to the hardening temperature, this refractory mortar can be divided into two types: air hardening and thermosetting. Air-hardening refractory mortar is usually formulated with air-hardening binders such as water glass. Thermosetting refractory mortar is usually formulated with thermosetting binders such as phosphoric acid or phosphate. After this kind of thermosetting refractory mortar is hardened, in addition to having high strength at various temperatures, it also has the characteristics of small shrinkage, tight joints, and strong corrosion resistance.

There are two types of refractory mortar: finished products and semi-finished products. The so-called finished refractory mortar means that the raw material and clinker have been prepared by the manufacturer in proportion, and only need to add water according to the standard and stir evenly when used on site; semi-finished or non-finished refractory mortar is raw material and clinker that are not blended together. When used on site, mix thoroughly according to the composition of different muds, and add water according to the regulations and stir evenly.
